Guimaraes, a city 30 miles north of Porto, will be European Capital of Culture 2012 (joint with Maribor in Slovenia) and will champion culture and creativity from a smaller city perspective, developing platforms, tools and ideas that will resonate for small cities everywhere.
As part of the programme it will run a Cidade (or City ) strand, seen as an urban laboratory, an ideas factory, an exploratory tool for a future city.
I attended a meeting in Guimaraes this week on behalf of Watershed and Tom Fleming Consultancy to set out the scope for an Open City project, to be delivered as part of the main programme. The Cidade Participativa strand will allow Guimaraes 202 to pioneer thinking on open city making – in governance, planning, infrastructure and engagement. It will commission leading thinkers on openness, platform symposia and pilot collaborations – right across Europe.
I’m looking forward to moving this forward over the coming months.
