Two very different projects in two very different cities – but linked by a desire to change models and methods of human interaction and innovation.
Aalto Design Factory is an exemplar of the intent to create the conditions and environment for open innovation – creative students, academic leads, commercial connections and manufacturing resources, all housed under one roof with transparency and accessibility built into the culture of the institution.
With the UK Science & innovation Network and the Creative Industries KTN I produced an event which brought together experts from UK and Finland in exploring user-centred design – see the Designing a People Centred Future site for all detail.
The Open City project in Guimaraes continues to commission thought pieces and artwork to explore the concept of openness as a driver of regeneration and culture change.
The project will culminate in the Cidade Campus in November, but recent activities have mapped the city from above (by balloon drone) to self-generate photographic and data resources, and shot a short film exploring the concept of the Smart City from the perspective of a small, and historically significant, city.
