Books & Print Sandbox – exploring the digital opportunity

The Publishing sector is undergoing seismic changes, with digital technologies fundamentally altering supply chain processes, from production through distribution to marketing and sales. But within those challenges this transformation is also generating commercial, and creative, opportunity.

Over a 3 month period the Books & Print Sandbox, produced by the REACT Hub and Pervasive Media Studio (and to which I was an advisor), invested in eight teams comprising partnerships of academics and creative businesses (and artists, choreographers, technologists, gamers, writers…) to develop new product ideas to push at the edges of the possible and gather experience, insight and evidence in search of new commercial potential.

With the project R&D now at an end I have written an overview document to seek to draw together the key insights generated by the Sandbox for publishers, brands, writers, editors and anyone interested in the future of publishing:

1. Disruptive not destructive

5. Value of the physical
